Tate Modern

Founded in 1992 with the intention of creating a space for international and contemporary art in London, the Tate Modern first opened its doors in May of 2000 in the South Bank neighborhood. The building, in its 13 years, has welcomed more than 40 million visitors and is one of the top three tourist attractions in London. The gallery, closed on Mondays, is opened from Sunday through Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am until 10 pm.

At the Tate Modern, current displays are typically planned out well in advance but last-minute changes occasionally (though rarely) take place. Most recently, the gallery will undergo its second renovation to create more gallery space on the top of Turbine Hall. Though the construction will last through 2013, the new Tate Modern promises to inspire and redefine the museum experience.
