Patience Makes Perfect: The Lost Art of Hand-Painted Design

In a recent installment of the “Shorts of Sundays” series, Nowness follows filmmakers Sam Macon and Faythe Levine cross-country, trekking to meet with hand-lettered sign painting artists. Macon said that their desire to travel the 3,000 miles from coast-to-coast was born after an informal apprenticeship with sign-painter Phil Vandervaart. Once completed, the artists took their work throughout the continental US; seeing such talent in their element gave way to the idea that Macon and Levine would set out to follow-up with the exceptional hand-letter painters. The short, only 7:30 long, outlines the work of hand-lettered painters in New York, Minnesota, Seattle and Los Angeles.
