Vivian Maier, 20th Century Urban Life As Seen Through Her Lens

Vivian Maier’s life as an artist played out like so many others who came before her. The American photographer produced a prolific collection of exceptional work, but received neither acclaim nor compensation during her own lifetime. Luckily for those of us around today, her remarkable skill has now been recognized and is available for all to study. While some of her more than 100,000 images are still being cataloged, what is available thanks to the efforts of the Maloof Collection, gives us a glimpse into life during the middle portion of the 20th century. Her most impressive work was done in New York City and then Chicago, capturing moments of diverse city dwellers, many of whom survived at the margin of society. We encourage you to visit a showing in person when it comes to pass, and in the meantime, enjoy her portfolios online and the gallery we’ve put together above.
