The 2017 SAG Awards

Held on Sunday, January 29, the SAG Awards have always signified the mid-way point of awards-show season. Halfway between the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards, the show, put together by the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the show has been heralded as one of the most fun shows of the season, solely for the fact that winners are chosen by their peers by way of their association memberships.

Predictably, this year’s nominees match many of the films, actors, actresses, and independent films that have been nominated (and may have already won) Golden Globe awards as well as Oscars. Hidden Figures, Moonlight, Captain Fantastic, Manchester by the Sea, and Fences were all nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. In the Leading Female category, Emma Stone in La La Land, Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins, Emily Blunt for Gone Girl, Amy Adams for Arrival, and Natalie Portman in Jackie all took home nominations.

In the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for TV, Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Crown, Stranger Things, and Downton Abbey each received nominations. Lily Tomlin will be honored with the 53rd Annual Life Achievement Award at the show, airing Sunday, January 29 on TBS and TNT at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
