Typically, we don’t use this forum for items that are overtly controversial or political in nature. However there are times when we find it necessary to address a topic that we feel strongly about, and today is such an occasion. We wanted to take a moment to mention the global reaction surrounding the shooting death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. In our opinion, the event is important for two reasons. The most obvious is that an unarmed teenager was killed walking home, while his assailant is free to roam the streets. This speaks to the fact that all to often young African Americans are profiled and put at risk for nothing more than the color of their skin. In addition, the craziness surrounding American gun laws makes these kinds of events possible to begin with — why on earth should a random citizen with a criminal record be allowed to patrol neighborhood streets seeking out what he perceives as suspicious activity?
