Gisele Bündchen Retires From the Runway

In April, International supermodel Gisele Bündchen announced her plans for retirement from the catwalk in an interview with a Brazilian-based newspaper. The 34-year-old mother revealed the lifestyle of a runway model wasn’t leaving her enough time for the other projects she’s interested in. She told Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, “I don’t see how to continue (modeling on the catwalk)… and stopping will leave room for other projects I have for myself.”

Bündchen also revealed the immense respect she has for her body, adding that she just knew it was time to end her runway regime. “Automatically my body tells me if what I do is worth it,” she told the paper, “and it asked to stop. I respect my body; it’s a privilege to be able to stop.” The Brazilian model, who shares two children and one stepson with husband Tom Brady, is one of the most sought-after and highest-paid models of our generation, famously inking a $25-million deal with Victoria’s Secret in 2000.

Shortly after the São Paulo newspaper interview ran, Bündchen walked her final runway, modeling for Colcci, a Brazilian brand, during the São Paulo Fashion Week. A standing ovation from the crowd, which included her parents, industry executives, her sisters, and her husband, greeted the model as she took her final bow. In two separate Instagram posts, Bündchen shared, “I am grateful that at 14, I was given the opportunity to start this journey. Today after 20 years in the industry, it is a privilege to be doing my last fashion show by choice and yet still be working in other facets of the business.” In her second post, she wears a tank that promises, “The best is yet to come.”
