The road to Kiev hasn’t been easy for both sides. Even though defending champions Real Madrid have reached a record 16th final appearance after ousting Bayern Munich in the semi-finals with a 4-3 aggregate for the second consecutive season, it has not come without its struggles in the Spanish league and cup. Barcelona won the league for the 24th time with an astonishing margin of 14 points to the runners up Atletico Madrid, leaving Real to take third with 76 points. The Path to any Champions League final is tough and painfully rigorous. The sacrifice these players make to become European champions is one that is sometimes overlooked. Not only do these players have to play for their respective leagues and league cups, but on years where the world cup is in the mix they also have to bare the struggles of playing through World Cup qualifying as well. This is a total of over 78 games played in a single season and that does not include the world cup, which will be starting in less than three weeks.
