1952 Alfa Romeo 1900 M ‘Matta’
One of just 2,050 produced, the 1952 Alfa Romeo 1900 M “Matta” has been dubbed one of the godfathers of the modern-day SUV. Though the Matta was originally based on the Rover, it comes with a stunning number of upgrades: an independent front suspension, rigid wheel axe, hydraulic shock absorbers, four-wheel drum breaks, a 65hp, 1,900cc engine, and canvas top that covers its full body. When it was first created, the car was based on a formula devised by Italy’s Ministry of Defense, and its goal was to be a vehicle that could overcome all obstacles — and it was only in production for two years. Though the Ministry’s order ultimately went to the Fiat, the Matta headed straight to Italy’s army (the Carabinieri).
